A powerful computer in the field, serving as the link between the timing units and the web app:

Broadcasts its own wireless network for connecting the timing units.
Keeps every timing unit's clock in sync.
Passes commands from the app to the timing units, such as the start signal for measuring reaction time.
Sets up an encrypted connection over the internet to the web app.
Connects to the internet by cable, through the venue's Wi-Fi, or through a phone's mobile hotspot.
Lets you connect it to the venue's Wi-Fi straight from your phone.
Stores the timing units' data locally if the internet connection drops.

Timing units with an industrial optical sensor: quicker set-up, less sensitivity to ambient light, steadier operation on sprung surfaces.
A hub with a local version of the app, which will keep working without an internet connection.
